Adding Chiropractic to Ergonomic Training: Better Neck Pain Relief for Industrial Workers

Industrial work is hard on the neck. Assembly lines, hunching over machinery, repetitive movements — the combination is a recipe for chronic neck pain that doesn't go away easily. Workers often get ergonomic training, which makes sense: learn better posture, adjust your workstation, take more breaks. But for many, the training alone doesn't fully solve the problem.

A new randomized controlled trial, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, tested a simple question: does adding chiropractic care to standard ergonomic training make a real difference for industrial workers with chronic neck pain?

What the Researchers Did

Forty-five male industrial workers with chronic nonspecific neck pain were randomly assigned to one of three groups for four weeks:

  • Ergonomic training + chiropractic adjustment (the full treatment group)

  • Ergonomic training + light-touch sham adjustment (to separate real effect from placebo)

  • Ergonomic training alone (the control)

Everyone was measured on pain intensity (VAS scale), biopsychosocial impact (BNQ), neck disability (NDI), and sleep quality (PSQI).

The Key Finding

The group that got ergonomic training plus real chiropractic care significantly outperformed the others on the two most meaningful measures:

  • Pain reduction: Strong, statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001)

  • Biopsychosocial impact: Also significantly better (p = 0.004) — workers in the chiropractic group felt the pain interfering less with daily life and function

Neck disability scores improved in all three groups about equally. Sleep quality didn't change meaningfully in any group after just four weeks.

Why This Matters

This is about workers on factory floors doing physically demanding jobs who often feel like they just have to live with the pain. A short course of chiropractic care — four weeks — layered on top of ergonomic training produced measurably better pain outcomes than training alone, and better than a sham procedure.

The sham group matters: workers who received a light-touch procedure alongside training didn't get the same benefit. The specific chiropractic adjustment appears to be doing something real.

How It Works

For workers who hold the same position for hours, spinal joints can lose normal range of motion, sending altered signals to the brain and keeping muscles in a constant guarded state. Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to restricted joints, changing sensory input to the central nervous system, reducing muscle tension, and helping the body stop treating the neck as 'under threat.'
