The Importance of Quality Supplements

June 6, 2014

Many people ask me why it is that I always recommend buying products from specific companies.  “What’s the difference between those companies and the vitamins I get at large chain stores or supermarkets?”  The answer is very simple, Quality.  The supplement industry contributes over $61 billion in sales each year, it’s a huge market.  Many companies want in on this and will make substandard products just to try and grab some market share.  It’s important to understand that vitamins and nutritional supplements are not governed by the FDA.  That means there is no guideline they have to follow as far as the quality of their product is concerned.  These companies can sell products that are full of contaminants or are essentially ineffective at what it is they promote to do.  The easiest example is fish oils.  Fish oils can be riddled with contaminants, such as mercury and other heavy metals, because the companies that make them may not put them through the rigorous quality control measures that the companies we recommend do.

Beyond contaminants there are other reasons you should buy quality products.  Certain supplements require a cofactor in order to be absorbed best.  I know that the last thing you want to do is spend your hard earned money on a product that doesn’t even get absorbed, right?  If you take a low quality supplement that doesn’t have the proper cofactor your body may never absorb the product in the quantities needed to be effective.  These types of interactions in your body have to be thoroughly researched and the products have to be expertly designed to work well.

The products that I sell or recommend in the clinic are only those of companies that I trust.  They have been researched and put through testing to assure their quality and effectiveness.   This doesn’t mean that they are the only brands that are of good quality, but they are the only ones I have familiarized myself with.  If you are concerned about a product you are taking please feel free to bring it in and I will take a look at it.
